A lovely series this, based on a terrific series of books. Horrible Histories takes a gleeful look back at history, mixing in lots of unpleasant moments with many funny ones. It’s a recipe that shouldn’t work, but very much does. Aimed at youngsters, it presents an engaging, accessible and outlandish look at history.

You get the first three series in this collection, that takes you through the Middle Ages, wars, the Greeks, the Romans and the Vikings, and each is treated with due respect. But Horrible Histories, with its sketch-like approach, has a lot of fun with it all too. Frequently very funny indeed, whether you’re young or old, it’s educational and genuinely entertaining. That’s some balance that it manages to achieve, and yet the tone is pretty near perfect. Furthermore, it’s savvy enough to move onto the next topic quickly enough, so boredom or disinterest isn’t given the slightest chance to slip in.

The DVD set throws in some welcome and equally fun extra features, too. It’s a well-collated mix of outtakes, deleted material and quiz questions, with a few songs thrown in for good measure. And, coupled with the number of episodes you get--there is, after all, nearly 20 hours of Horrible Histories here--it proves to be a terrific all-round package. Heartily recommended.
