Series 1
Stephen Tompkinson (Wild at Heart, Grafters) leads the cast as detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks, based on the hugely successful novels from award-winning international crime writer Peter Robinson. Tompkinson stars in the TV adaptation of three Inspector Banks novels: Playing with Fire, Friend of the Devil and Cold is the Grave.

In Playing with Fire two bodies are found after a fire on some narrow boats and Banks and DS Annie Cabbot find themselves on the trail of an arsonist who has killed two people. In Friend of the Devil a young student is attacked in the middle of the city and in another part of Yorkshire a woman has her throat cut, but the two different murders have disturbing similarities.

Cold is the Grave is a case terrifyingly close to home as Banks is asked by his boss, Superintendant Gerry Rydell, to find his missing teenage daughter…

Series 2
Another three two-part episodes from the ITV drama series based on the crime novels by Peter Robinson. Stephen Tompkinson stars as the tenacious and stubborn Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks, who unravels a string of disturbing murder mysteries aided by his feisty and ambitious young assistant, DS Annie Cabbot (Andrea Lowe). In 'Strange Affair', Banks, assisted by icy DI Helen Morton (Caroline Katz) while Annie is on maternity leave, investigates the murder of a woman found shot dead in her car. In 'Dry Bones That Dream', Banks is called in to investigate the death of a mild-mannered accountant, Keith Rothwell (Dominic Mafham), who appears to be the victim of a contract killing. Finally, in 'Innocent Graves', the strangling of a wealthy financier's 16-year-old daughter unearths a complex web of lies and secrets for Banks to solve.

Season 3
Stephen Tompkinson returns as the tenacious and stubborn Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks in three gripping crime stories based on the novels by award-winning writer Peter Robinson.

Wednesday's Child
When a mother reports her child as having been abducted by a man and a woman masquerading as social workers, Banks is drawn into a strange and unsettling search for the missing young boy.

Piece of My Heart
Following the death of a journalist, Banks and his team discover connections to a suspicious death in the eighties involving the surviving members of a pop band.

Bad Boy
A terrible chain of events is set in motion when an old neighbour of Banks' finds a loaded gun in her daughter's bedroom. Circumstances take a dramatic turn when Banks begins to fear for the safety of his own daughter.

Season 4
English detective, DCI Alan Banks, returns in this fourth series of the popular crime drama based on Peter Robinson's novels with three new, original stories set against the striking backdrop of rural and urban Yorkshire.

In What Will Survive, DCI Banks struggles to cope with the sudden death of his mother, as he investigates the murder of a young Estonian woman and the disappearance of her drug-dependent sister. Evidence seems to point to a young man with autism who is killed in an arson attack. But Helen suspects that the real culprit is a local businessman looking to shift the blame. Banks and his team uncover a dark world of vice in a desolate town and a terrible abuse of human rights.

During the second story, Buried, Banks must navigate difficult emotional territory when the body of an eminent lawyer is washed up in an underground river and he suspects a member of her grieving family is responsible for her death. Her devout Muslim brother believes she was having an affair with a former employee, but when the employee's body is also discovered, Banks finds himself running a double murder investigation. The team must unravel a web of lies and secrets to discover the unsettling truth behind these deaths.

In Ghosts, when the body of a university student is found dumped in a ravine, his friends claim he was a model undergraduate. But officers Annie and Ken soon discover that he had a double life manufacturing ecstasy. Helen's world is turned upside down when she realises her former lover, an undercover police officer, is following their main suspect. She is horrified when an angry Banks tells her that this man may be behind the murder. Helen sets out to learn the truth and discovers the dead boy is actually the officer's son. Banks and Helen must find him before he exacts revenge on the real killer.

Season 5:
Another three two-part episodes from the ITV drama series based on the crime novels by Peter Robinson. Stephen Tompkinson stars as the tenacious and stubborn Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks, who unravels a string of disturbing murder mysteries aided by his feisty and ambitious young assistant, DS Annie Cabbot (Andrea Lowe) and DI Helen Morton (Caroline Catz). In this instalment the trio investigate the murder of a drug dealer who died near a shrine to a teenager's suicide. The episodes are: 'To Burn in Every Drop of Blood: Part 1', 'To Burn in Every Drop of Blood: Part 2', 'A Little Bit of Heart: Part 1', 'A Little Bit of Heart: Part 2', 'Undertow: Part 1' and 'Undertow: Part 2'.
Synopsis

DCI Banks returns for its grittiest season yet with an explosive serial crime story that weaves through three feature length episodes.
To Burn in Every Drop of Blood:

When the victim of a frenzied attack is found in woodland, the team wonder if it’s a random killing or related to the location - a shrine to a local girl who recently committed suicide there. But when Banks uncovers a link to local crime boss Steve Richards, he becomes convinced that this is his chance to finally nail the hitherto untouchable criminal.
A Little Bit of Heart:

What starts out as a missing person case in Leeds’ Chinese community soon escalates into a kidnap and ransom and then finally murder. Banks and his team are plunged into a world of protection gangs and the exploitation of immigrants before the discovery of a dark family secret reveals the true motive behind the crimes.
Undertow:

Banks and his team struggle to put personal feelings aside as they investigate the stabbing of a fellow officer. As they attempt to nail the culprit, Banks’ actions become increasingly reckless, forcing Chief Superintendent Anderson to put him on gardening leave. With Helen made Acting DCI, Banks finds himself operating on the other side of the law, using his years of experience to crack this most harrowing case.
